Social media is now one of the biggest sources of our information; entertainment can shape our thoughts as well. It is just that TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are much more than just helping us connect with others. They are a whole business that makes money by ‘capturing’ our attention and selling us to advertisers, so they will throw all the content that makes us keep scrolling.
One more important takeaway from the media industries and economics articles and chapters: the audience matters for media industries. Media firms, when they have the attention of the audience, can generate revenue through advertising. With social media, algorithms match new recommendations with how people watch, share, and comment on the media they interact with. Users are creating their own viewing experiences but are also limited.
For example, if I am always watching videos on a specific topic, I may tend to watch more of that topic. All of the users I watch may be in the same mental mode, beliefs, or point of view. It is easier for a person to believe that everyone in the world has the same point of view, but that same user could have a completely different experience than another user of the same site.
Media content & delivery: Media concentration, where a small number of companies control the majority of the media. This influences the kinds of content people see—those with powerful media companies can choose what kinds of media content they want; for the grassroots audiences that have access to social media, the content that the algorithms are given still dictates what is possible.
I notice the effect in my own media consumption because I use social media without having any specific content in mind. The algorithm delivers videos, posts, and ads based on what I’ve previously viewed. At times I find new material, but at other times it dawns on me that I’ve been watching the same videos with the same content for the past 20 minutes.
Finally, social media has played a role in the interaction between the media industries and the audience. The media we see and consume is now more in the hands of how we click, look at, like, post, share, and comment rather than simply the way we consume the media. Becoming familiar with the business that runs social media has made me understand that my feed is not a brain dump!
